Use of recommendation systems

- How LOVOO’s recommendation systems work;
- What they are used for;
- The basic logic behind it;
- How different factors are connected;
- And how you can influence what is displayed to you.
II. Which recommendation systems does LOVOO use?
1. Match/Swiping game
The match/swiping game shows you profiles of other members as potential matches.
The order in which these profiles are shown to you depends on several key factors:
● User scores
Each profile is assigned a score that reflects how well it matches yours.
This score is calculated by an algorithm that takes into account, for example, the following:
- How active the user is;
- The predicted probability of a mutual “like” between you and the person;
- Whether the person has a Premium subscription;
- Whether it shows normal, non-spammy behavior;
- Whether she is underrepresented (to give everyone a fair chance).
These scores help you decide who to see first.
● Boost
If you use the boost function, you will be more visible to others.
Boost users get reserved places so that their profile appears more often in the match/swiping game.
● Your behavior & your settings
You can influence who appears in your match game by:
- are more active and swipe regularly;
- takes out a Premium subscription;
- Boost uses;
- customize your filters (e.g. distance, age, gender).
If your filters don’t match someone else’s – or if you’ve excluded certain groups – you won’t see those users, and they won’t see you.
2. “Close to you”
The “Near you” area shows you a grid of people who are physically in your vicinity.
The selection is based on two main factors:
- Distance:
This is the most important factor. The closer someone is to you, the more likely the person appears.
- Activity in the app:
Users who are more active (have used the app more frequently and recently) receive a higher activity score and are displayed more prominently.
The function therefore combines how close someone is to you with their activity to show you relevant people nearby.
Tip: You can influence who is shown to you in “Near you” by adjusting your distance or search filters in the app settings – just like in the match/swiping game.
3. “Best Picks”
“Best Picks” shows you a daily selection of potential matches that suit you particularly well.
This list is created by an algorithm based on your answers to the “Best Picks” questionnaire.
This is how it works:
- The first step is to check how many questions on the questionnaire both you and the other person have answered.
- Then count how often your answers match.
- Your compatibility score is the ratio of matching answers to the questions you both answered. The more matches, the higher the score.
Other factors also play a role, such as distance, gender and who you are looking for.
Tip: If you change your questionnaire answers, this will directly affect who is displayed in your “Best Picks”.
